All,
A few of you have asked about the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) playoffs and where we stand. Here is the explanation.
The College Women's Div II regular season ended with 3 teams (Longwood, Mary Washington, and William & Mary) tied for first with 5-1 records and 21 Match Points each. The Virginia Rugby Union 2011 Handbook specifies the procedure for resolving ties in the section entitled "POINTS SYSTEM AND TIEBREAKING PROCEDURE FOR LEAGUE MATCHES" on pages 36 and 37.
The Virginia Rugby Union Executive Committee agreed that the steps described below are the proper interpretation of the procedure and the results are correct.
Step 1 of this procedure looks at head-to-head record. This step did not resolve the tie because Mary Washington beat William & Mary, William & Mary beat Longwood, and Longwood beat Mary Washington.
Step 2 of the procedure uses the point differential for matches between the tied teams. The results of those three matches were:
Mary Washington 19 - William & Mary 0
William and Mary 37 - Longwood 5
Longwood 20 - Mary Washington 5
Longwood, points for (5 + 20) - points against (37 + 5) = -17
Mary Washington, points for (19 + 5) - points against (0 + 20) = +4
William & Mary, points for (0 + 37) - points against (19 + 5) = +13
This results in these three teams being ranked in the following order:
1. William & Mary +13
2. Mary Washington +4
3. Longwood -17
Since Step 2 resolved the ties, no further steps were required.
Advancing to the next round are #1 William & Mary and #2 Mary Washington
